年配世代や中高年世代はそうそう多くの言語が使えるものではありません。でもデブレツェンとくれば、大きな大学があるところですし、若年世代との会話が可能になるに違いありませんでしょう。 〔Elder and middle-age people don't really speak languages. However, since Debrecen has a large university, I'm sure you'll be able to speak with the younger generation.〕

ハンガリーいたことあるけど、大型の街（要はブダペスト）以外じゃ英語喋る人なんぞほぼおらんかったぞ。 〔I found that when I was in Hungary, almost no one spoke English when you're outside the large cities (ie. Budapest).〕

人によっては通じるでしょうね。年配世代になるとドイツ語のほうが通用します。若年世代になると英語を幾らばかりか知っているかもしれません。デブレツェンは大学の町ですからね。英語が通じる人もいるにはいるでしょう。 〔You will be able to communicate with some of them. とりあえず言えるのは、人々は友好的だし触れ合いに際しても気さくだということ。とにかく声を掛けてみてください。現地語を話さない外国人にハンガリーの人々が慣れ切っていることは確か。なので別に驚かれることはないでしょうね。 〔All that said, people are friendly and open to communication, just approach them. デブレツェンはそれもう見事な大学の町です。30歳未満なら英語が少しは喋れるという方がほとんどです。バーやらダンスクラブやらでも何の不便もないことでしょう。ただ食料品の買い物の際や『公的』な場所（郵便局や交通機関など）になると難度が上昇するかもです。とはいえ最高峰のハンガリー語教育でその名を知らしめているのがデブレツェン大学ですからね。（なんとブダペストにまで分校がある！） 私は3週間過程を取ったのですが（前もっていくらかハンガリー語知っとりました）、まったく正解でした。3週間のうちにわりとくまなく学ぶことができます。現地語ができればハンガリー人からの評価も上昇することでしょう。時間をお持ちならば検討されてみてはどうでしょうか。まあ無くとも別に問題はないでしょうがね。 〔Debrecen's a great university town. Most people under 30 speak at least a little English and you won't have a problem, say, in a bar or dance club. But grocery shopping or doing "official" things (post office, transportation and so on) may be tougher. That said, the University of Debrecen is generally reknowned throughout the world for having the best course for the study of the Hungarian language. (So much so, they've even opened a branch in Budapest!) I took a three week course from them (I already knew some Hungarian) and absolutely loved it. In three weeks, you can learn enough to get around reasonably well . . . and the Hungarians would love you for it. Consider it if you have time, but otherwise you'll be fine.〕
